Release & spam in forum

Postby hsinanch on Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:54 pm

Hi all,

Kind of wondering if this forum is still alive?

We plan to use EnGarde as gateway, but it has been a long time since 3.0.22 without any update/upgrade/release information.
What we saw is spam everywhere in the forum and they are clean up once a while, but, still, no update yet.

Any progress?

Thanks,

Jason

Hi guys. We really appreciate your feedback. We have lately been concentrating on commercial interests, because, frankly, there has been very little feedback in what we have done most recently. Although it has been some time since a full release, we have received several emails and responded with updates to address the problems they have found.

We need your involvement. The SELinux work that we pioneered requires a tremendous amount of effort and resources, and never really substantiated because we received very little feedback other than asking questions about how to use it.

What we need is people to help popularize it, contribute code and documentation, distribution mirrors, ideas of how it's being used so we can write the applications you wish to use most, and help testing very beta changes.

We'd also like people proficient with HTML and GIMP/photoshop to help with graphics and improvements to the engardelinux.org web site.

It would also be nice if people volunteered to prune the forum or work with Guardian Digital developers to incorporate anti-spam measures. We just don't have the time, and it reflects badly on the look of the site.

If you're interested, and think you can contribute in any way, drop us a line. We'd love to get you involved.

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Here are my comments:
1. EnGarde Linux didn't have IPS, and the IDS is limited. Users need an automatic & notice to block bad guys from Internet, real-time alarm, daily report.
2. EnGarde Linux is a secure server, firewall/router, but it's not a UTM device. You can't easily setup it as a UTM to filter out virus/spam from emails and web content.
3. EnGarde has a poor marketing, honestly. You can easily find others in search engine, but very few for EnGarde.
4. EnGarde didn't include complete user guide, howto, and faq. Those docs online are too simple. Beginner may have difficulty to install and configure it.
5. SELinux part can be enhanced with more features. This is one key feature others didn't have it.
6. Report part is too simple. Once you saw a daily report from Astaro, you will know it.
7. I would suggest two EnGarde releases. One is for server, one is for fireall/router/UTM. User can choose what version they prefer.
8. Include more customized secure addons from 3rd tools like fwsnort and so on.
9. There is no remote backup. The build-in backup is really too simple and not secure at all.
10. Server self monitoring. Admin should know the system status immediately when something is wrong via email alarm, or report from cron job.

Hope this help.

Thanks,

Jason
