[EnGarde] Network cards not recognized by LiveCD

Hi Everyone,
I downloaded the 3.0.2 livecd and checked the MD5.
I booted the cd on two machines - an Athlon 1.2Ghz with 256Mb RAM and a Linksys LNE100 ethernet card, and on a Compaq Evo P4 with built in ethernet.
On both machines I accepted default values all the way through the initial boot, including DHCP for network configuration. (I have tested my dhcp server - it's working.) When I reached the Install vs. LiveCD screen, I chose LiveCD. I then ended at a login prompt. I logged in as root and did 'ifconfig' which showed only the loopback interface.
Where do I go from here? I'm not exactly inexperienced with Unix and Linux, but I have no experience troubleshooting this one. Any pointers and suggestions will be gladly accepted.
One little nitpick while I have it in mind: when entering the root password during the initial install, I did not get any visual feedback on the screen to my typing - no **'s appeared which was a little disconcerting.
