Took a few iterations, but I just sent a patch to the list that fixes
the underlying issue.
I won't apply it to the Debian packages yet, because I have to double
check that it doesn't introduce a memory leak (I don't believe it does,
but I want to be extra careful around those parts of the code that I
touch for the first time).
